DRUG INFO
Vigabatrin

Drug Name: Vigabatrin

Indication: Used for the treatment of refractory seizure disorders (epilepsy, complex partial seizures, seconday generalized seizures and infantile spasms in West syndrome

Pharmacology: Vigabatrin, although chemically unrelated to other anticonvulsants, is an anticonvulsant used to treat tonic-clonic seizures, complex partial seizures, absence seizures, myoclonic seizures, bipolar disorder, and migraines. It inhibits the catabolism of GABA.

Mechanism Of Action: Vigabatrin is an irreversible inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T), the enzyme responsible for the catabolism of GABA. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS. This inhibition increases the level of GABA in the synapses. Vigabatrin is a racemic compound, and its [S]-enantiomer is pharmacologically active. Vigabatrin may also work by suppressing repetitive neuronal firing through inhibition of voltage-sensitive sodium channels. Vigabatrin is an analog of GABA but is not a receptor agonist.
